Jetties are an important part of the infrastructure in coastal areas.Unfortunately, their structural condition and load bearing capabilities are often neglected over time. In particular, when a jetty is situated in salt-water, the concrete is subject to increased chloride levels within the structure, corroding the reinforcing steel and adversely affecting the structural stability of the jetty. This can easily reach critical levels. Repairing corrosion in jetties using CP methods is expensive, since it is difficult to assess the full extent of the damage, and specialist repairs can be hindered by the weather and the structure's location.

The patented CASSETTE system, developed by Protector,  offers a solution for this type of problem. The system consists of non-corroding, strong, synthetic cassettes containing Ti ribbons set in felt. The felt is treated with a hydrophobic impregnating agent, ensuring moist and conductive conditions in the cassette. The Cassettes can be easily clamped to the concrete structure and interconnected. They are simple to install either by contractors or local workers. For optimum performance, the CASSETTE CP system is monitored by the Camur II, digital surveillance system. Animation here.

To maximise future protection from corrosion, new jetties that are built , particularly where there is an expected long life-span, will benefit from having the CP system embedded in the structure before casting the concrete. Incorporating the CP  system at the construction stage adds only a negligible additional cost yet provides a long-term economic benefit through extended life-span and fractional maintenace costs.
